Kitto Construction has successfully worked for Montpelier High School (formerly Colston’s Girls’ School) since the 1980’s on new build, refurbishment and maintenance projects. These included the new Music Block and the conversion of existing shops into classrooms, school shop and residential accommodation.
The School achieved Academy status in 2008 and obtained funding to undertake a major reconstruction and refurbishment programme under the “Schools for the Future” scheme. Skanska were the appointed main contractor in the Bristol Area under the ‘LEP’. Skanska negotiated and appointed Kitto as sub-contractor to manage and undertake the upgrading and refurbishment of the 1960’s three storey Dolphin Block for new classrooms for science and technology teaching.
It was essential that teaching facilities were retained in use so the project was undertaken in two phases. The first phase was mainly enabling work, providing infrastructure and services and converting the second floor to classrooms. In both phases, minimisation of noise, disruption and inconvenience was paramount to maintain teaching on the floors below. Services and means of escape also had to be maintained while allowing access for disabled students and construction operations. The second phase was the refurbishment of the ground and first floors during the summer holidays to ensure these areas were completed by the start of the autumn term.
Kitto Construction achieved the staged handovers and completion on time, ensuring full teaching facilities were operational for the start of term within the original budget.
