Westbury-on-Trym Surgery in north-west Bristol occupied a cramped property on busy Falcondale Road (A4018) with little parking, and relocation to a new larger facility in the area was necessary.
The Practice and its advisors acquired an old allotment site in the centre of Westbury-on-Trym, by a busy car park in a Conservation Area, adjoining housing and the listed Parish Church. Kitto Construction Ltd were engaged to work with the design team at an early stage of the design process to advise on programme, materials and practicalities to ensure the success of this potentially difficult and complicated scheme.
Kitto successfully managed the organisation and liaison with the Council, local residents, businesses and utilities to complete these enabling works promptly and with minimal inconvenience to the town. This included managing the closure of the main road for the minimum possible period to allow the installation of the mains services to the site.
The new high quality surgery is part single and part two storey with an internal private courtyard. The scheme comprises eight consulting rooms, four treatment rooms, two minor operations rooms, examination room, one counselling, district nurses and nurse practitioners room and various ancillary rooms. The scheme also includes a pharmacy operated by Lloyds.
The external works included providing a private staff car park and revising and re-surfacing the shopper’s car park, landscaping and providing a new pedestrian access to the medical centre.
The building was completed under the £2m budget and within 50 weeks, one week ahead of programme, and the centre was fully operational one week later.
