Multi Activity Hall: Clifton College Preparatory School, Clifton, Bristol

Construction Value: £595,000

The school required a multi activity hall for use by the Preparatory School for children aged between 5 and 13. The hall would be used for sports, dining at lunchtime and general activities.

The chosen site was occupied in part by old fives courts and an open play area within the existing school site.  The space available for the new building was restricted by the proximity of other existing school buildings that were to be retained.  The adjacent design and technology centre was partially demolished and reconstructed to accommodate the new hall.

The use of adjacent buildings and play areas had to be maintained throughout construction of the new multi activity hall.  Being located in an established residential area and a Conservation Area, the design, materials and construction methods required significant dialogue with the Local Planning Authority.

Kitto liaised closely throughout the project with Clifton College Preparatory School, the Local Planning Authority and their Archaeologist, as well as the local residents, in order to achieve the schools objectives with minimum delay and within their available budget.

The new multi activity hall was completed within the proposed programme of 28 weeks and to the College’s original budget.

The new building provides indoor sports facilities including badminton and tennis, and dining seating for 150 pupils with food storage and preparation areas and a servery.  The scheme also included changing rooms, a plant room and an accessible toilet.
